This recipe is for adults ages 21+. Always drink responsibly and do not drink and drive.

I have had the pleasure of sharing the recipe for Mexican Chocolate Ice Cream Pie from the cookbook by Southern Living: Scooped: Ice Cream Treats, Cheats, and Frozen Eats. Today I am going to share with you the recipe for Mississippi Mudslides from the same cookbook.

It is a very tasty way to finish the day. Although the recipe includes bourbon, it can be made without it making it a child-friendly treat.

Carton of chocolate ice cream.

If you don’t want to have extra ice cream in the freezer, you could simply buy small cups of each ice cream at your favorite, store, reduce the milk to 1/4 cup, and the bourbon to 2 Tablespoons (or omit it entirely).

Ingredients

For this decadent adult boozy dessert, you need the following ingredients:

  • 1 pint chocolate ice cream
  • 1 pint coffee ice cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • ยฝ cup bourbon
  • Garnishes: whipped cream, chocolate syrup, marshmallows

How To Make Mississippi Mudslides

Place 1 pint of chocolate ice cream, 1 pint of coffee ice cream, 1 cup of milk, and ยฝ  cup of bourbon in a blender and blend until smooth.

Pour into two glasses and enjoy.

For a little pizzazz, drizzle some homemade chocolate sauce in the bottom of your glass prior to filling. Topping it with whipped cream is the “cherry on top.”

NOTE

Bourbon is a strong alcoholic beverage. If you have never tried it, I recommend that you start with only 2 tablespoons or up to as much as ยผ cup. You can always add more, but you cannot take any away.

Mississippi Mudslide Background

There are a few things we need to get straight. There are  Mississippi Mud Pies, Mississippi Mud Cakes, and Mississippi Mudslides.

A Mississippi Mud Pie is a rich, chocolate pie made with layers of chocolate brownie cake, chocolate custard, and whipped cream in a graham or cookie crust.

A Mississippi Mud Cake is similar to the pie, only in cake form. It has a sweet, chocolate cake base topped with marshmallows and rich, chocolate frosting.

A Mississippi Mudslide is a boozy adult rendition of the classic flavors with chocolate, coffee, and bourbon topped with marshmallows and chocolate.

The names for all three versions of Mississippi Mud likely stem from the fact that the rich, chocolate in the dish resembles the banks of the Mississippi River.  There is also the possibility that one of the dishes originated in the State of Mississippi. Whether or not any of that is true, all three desserts are delicious!

The recipe for Mississippi Mudslide was easy to follow, easy to make, and delicious. It’s just one of many great ideas in Scooped.

  1. Anything that has ice cream I’m game for. I do like ice cream cake though – that’s probably my favorite. Milkshakes are easiest though, so I make them most often.
