Today Huntsville welcomes a new restaurant to the dining scene – Kona Grill. My husband and I got a sneak peek of the what Kona, a contemporary American grill, has to offer the Valley. Want to look inside?
The environment at Kona is very chic and upbeat music fills the air. For the preview night, a special ice carving was on display along with a few varieties of their sushi.
The sushi – how I wish I hadn’t tried it. I ate so much of it that I was too full to try samples of other Kona specialties. The rolls on the left in the picture below are the bama roll: crab mix, cream cheese, jalapeno, tuna, avocado, soy paper, spicy motoyaki sauce, and smelt roe.
Kona has an entire section of its menu devoted to sushi and offers everything from the atlantic roll to the yamada roll.
The cocktails at Kona are really good. I found the strawberry basil lemonade (Bacardi dragon berry rum, lemonade, basil, strawberry, Sprite) to be light and refreshing. Kona also serves sake, beer, hard cider, local drafts, mules, and mojitos in addition to classic cocktails.
Starters include potstickers (shown below), fondue, wraps, chicken satay, avocado egg rolls, kona calamari, edamame, and a taco trio.
Flatbreads, salads, sandwiches, and soups are available on the menu. Entrees include macadamia nut chicken (people were raving about it), miso-saké sea bass, jambalaya, and pad thai noodles. The “little” burger below was a slider. If that is any indication of portion sizes, then I would assume that they will be of a generous size.
To complete a night of upscale dining, Kona Grill has a nice selection of desserts from which to choose. My husband’s favorite sample was carrot cake. The menu describes it as 3 layer carrot cake, cream cheese frosting, caramel sauce, and toasted walnuts.
With temperatures dipping into the 50’s in the evenings, it’s going to be perfect weather for sitting outside on the patio. The restaurant’s bar straddles the inside and the out and has televisions on both sides so that diners won’t have to miss the game.

The 7,000 square foot restaurant is located next to Belk and is the first Kona Grill location in Alabama. The dining area and bar can accommodate around 389 people. The Huntsville location is the 43rd in the United States and Puerto Rico.
