Curb your appetite, not your enthusiasm! What experts are saying about Salba Chia Seeds for weight loss.
Diets are a bore. Most are sabotaged by hunger panes, while others lack good nutrition. There’s no quick fix for weight loss, but dieticians are now widely recommending chia as a versatile ingredient that can boost nutritional value while increasing satiety. Experts like Dr. Oz recommend chia seeds as a healthy way to manage appetite. Men’s Fitness says of chia: “Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, soluble fiber, and even a little bit of protein, these tiny seeds can elevate just about any meal or snack to a nutritional powerhouse.” And ‘Biggest Loser’ star, Rachel Beller, MS, RD, goes further, noting that Salba Chia is, “My absolute, ultimate, favorite fiber, antioxidant and omega-3 booster!” Here’s why Salba chia is a dieter’s new ally:
- Boosts Nutrition: Salba chia is the richest whole food source of Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) and fiber found in nature on a gram for gram basis. Every 15g serving of Salba provides over 3,400 mg of Omega-3s (ALA) – 800% more Omega-3 (ALA) than salmon (EPA/DHA). Salba has less than 1 g net carbohydrate per serving.
- Curbs Appetite: Each serving contains 5.1g of dietary fiber to support healthy digestion and increase satiety, which can help to ward of cravings and sugar crashes. Salba chia seeds absorb many times their weight in water, which helps to slow digestion and leave you feeling fuller for longer.
There are some great benefits to me as a Salba Chia Ambassador, such as getting to sample their great products. Another recent benefit is that I was sent was Rachel Beller’s book Eat to Lose, Eat to Win.
I have read numerous diet books covering various aspects of dieting. Initially I put the book aside thinking it would be just more of the “same ole, same ole.” Then I picked it up and read it. In fact, it only took me a couple of days because I found it to be a refreshing change. Rachel writes in a very personal style and I can only imagine how down to earth she is. She writes, “I confess I have cravings too – and they’re not for eggplant or tofu. (Even I think that’s weird.) […] Yes, I have an inner cookie monster.” (p.56)
Fiber is the Key
The main lesson I took from the book was that our fiber intake is very important to our health. Did you know that women should be consuming 35 grams of fiber per day? Most only get 11 to 15 grams on their good days.
After reading her book, I increased my chia consumption – it’s an easy way to add fiber to my diet. I tried Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes the other day. (Not a peanut butter or banana fan? Check out the recipe for Oatmeal Pancakes on Salba’s website.) Two tablespoons of ground chia has 5 grams of fiber. (Compare that to your usual breakfast cereal.) I also add it to my bowl of oat bran and am starting to find ways to add it to recipes I already like to make such as Seven Grain Cereal Bread.
Another way I like to add chia to my diet is to add it to my breakfast smoothie. If you don’t like the texture of crushed ice or chia seeds, you can easily substitute frozen banana slices and ground chia in the recipe below.
- 8 oz. vanilla light soy milk
- 1 scoop Peanut Butter Whey Protein
- 1 medium size banana
- 5 ice cubes
- 1 Tbsp chia
- 1/2 tsp espresso powder
- Place all ingredients in blender and process until well mixed.
- Pour into glass and enjoy.
This makes a great dessert substitute. Garnish with whipped cream and you won't feel like you are missing out on anything.
Without whipped cream, it is roughly 380 calories and has just over 9 grams of fiber.
